Information On Craft Beer Near Onalaska

By Kimberly Olson

Craft brewery, also called microbrewery refers to the production of beer but in very minute quantities in comparison to production in large-scale commercial production. The products produced by microbreweries are craft beer. These producers have been described as being traditional, independent, and small-scale. Flavor, technique, and flavor are given more emphasis than any other factor in this kind of production. Large-scale producers often emphasize quantity, price, and automation among other qualities more.

The microbrewing movement has its origin in the 1970s in the United Kingdom. However, the art of artisanal brewing can be traced in Europe to several centuries back. From Europe, this art spread to other continents and expanded. The expansion of the idea of microbrewing led to the birth of the more encompassing concept of craft brewing. When in need of craft beer near Onalaska, there are many stores and pubs that one can visit to get the best quality.

Originally, the use of the term microbrewery reflected size of breweries. Later, this stand changed as attitudes changed to reflect adaptability, customer service, experimentation, and flexibility. The introduction of this term in the United States happened in 1980s. Later, it began being used to refer to breweries that had an annual production of less than 15000 barrels. This is an equivalent of 1800000 liters.

Microbreweries adopt a completely different marketing strategy from how large-scale breweries do their marketing. Instead of relying on advertising and low prices to market products, microbreweries base on diversity and quality for marketing. This has allowed them to have greater influence compared to the market share controlled by them. Most microbreweries have been acquired by large-scale producers as a competition strategy against their competitors.

Since 2012, producers have adopted cans on large scale as the most preferable means of packaging. The advantages offered by cans make them attractive. First, contents cool faster and they do not get affected by beer-degrading light. Transportation and storage of canned products is also much easier because can consume less space. Wraparound designs and decorations are easy to incorporate in cans because they has larger surface area.

Microbreweries in the United States distribute their products through wholesalers. They use the traditional three-tier system. Other producers do the distribution on their own and sell to retailers. Others use attached restaurants, off-premises sales, and tap rooms to make direct sales to consumers. Laws between states vary widely because alcohol regulation is usually a matter of the state.

Four main microbrewing markets exist in the US. The first market is made of microbreweries with 15000 barrels of production every year. The next market has brewpubs that have 25 percent of their products sold onsite. The third market category is comprised of regional craft breweries. The production limit of regional craft breweries ranges from 15000 to 6000000 US barrels.

The United States has the most established microbrewing industry. Only breweries established after the 70s are called craft breweries. However, the name may also be used for establishments that existed beyond 1970s but are similar in characteristics.
