By Edward Powell

Breast augmentation refers to a surgery in which there is increasing of the size of breasts. The procedure involves placement of implants under breast tissues or beneath the chest muscles. Women consider it for a number of reasons. Others opt for it to increase confidence while others use it for rebuilding breasts after some conditions. It is done by a plastic surgeon. In consideration of breast augmentation Daytona Beach residents need to know what the procedure involves.

It is also done for restoring symmetry of breasts which are not symmetrical. The surgical procedure includes reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. The surgery could also be done as part of treatment for breast cancer. There are various types of implants that can be used. The first type are saline implants that are filled with a saline solution that is sterile. An example is salt water. The implants are filled with different amounts of saline and affect firmness, feel and shape of breasts.

The other option is silicone gel filled implant. These have silicone in their outer shell which gets filled with silicone gel. If there is leakage of the implants, the gel stays in the shell or it escapes into the pocket implants. The women that choose this option should be ready to go for more regular checkups that if saline implants were used. The checkups are done using MRI or ultrasounds.

Before the surgery, the surgeon will help the patient with choice of the right implant size. This could be done by placing different sizes into a bra to see how they feel. There is use of general anesthetic, which means the patient will be asleep during treatment. There are however instances in which the patient is awake, which is when local anesthesia is used.

The incision that is used will depend on many factors. They include the level of enlargement and patients anatomy. It is also dependent on implant type and surgeon or patient preferences. There is then inserting and placement of implants, which is done through either sub muscular or sub mammary placement. The former involves placement under the pectoral muscles while the other one goes behind breast tissues.

Incisions are normally closed through the use of stitches or sutures. In order to keep them closed, surgical tape or skin adhesives are used. During the first few days after placement, the incisions are visible but they disappear with time. There is some swelling that is left behind but which is resolved in fortnight. It is only then that one can know if their expectations are met.

As the anesthetic wears off, patients are supposed to be given painkillers for management of pain. Patients are advised to make arrangement for transport home because they are not able to effectively drive immediately after. Sutures are supposed to disappear in about 6 weeks. If sutures used do not dissolve, there will be follow-up appointment to have them removed.

There are a few possible risks, just as is the case with any surgical procedure. For once, there might be the need for additional operation after a few years. Also, there are patients that might need surgery to have the implants removed for one reason or the other.
