How To Establish A Georgia Pecan Farm

By Diane McDonald

Pecan nut farming can be a lucrative long term investment that one can venture in. However, the success of such an orchard depends on the kind of decisions that the aspiring farmer makes. One should rely on someone with experience in such type of farming and maintain patience to make the best out of such an investment. Here are a few aspects about how to establish a Georgia pecan farm that one can ponder on.

Determine the best weather condition for the plant. You need to acknowledge ideal weather conditions for this kind of farming before you decide to start it. They thrive well in a mild climate where it can support long seasons. The minimum temperature that the tree can go up to negative twenty degrees Fahrenheit and a maximum degree of fifty-five degrees Fahrenheit.

Calculate your budget. You need to acknowledge your total costs beforehand to make the right plan as early as possible. Your budget includes the size of your land, the total labor costs, disease and pest control expenses and number of plants to consider. Seek a budget for a similar farm which has been successful enough. One can as well rely on a farm manager if you are not competent enough.

Confirm whether to consider cultivators. Selecting cultivator is a process that involves choosing the right type of tree that can withstand scab. One can decide to plant a plant that can tolerate scab or not. Those that are in places with high humidity should look for an intolerant variety since such areas have a high susceptibility to scab.

Take note of your spacing. Most people with large farms can use around eight plants in an acre. Such thoughts are way forgotten since large has become scarce and people are up to making a substantial return. Therefore, people have been using high densities for small areas. The least size includes a thirty by thirty square space which can accommodate forty-nine plants. This will ensure a high yield in a small area.

Determine the right planting method. There are a variety of planting methods that one can adopt. The most common means include planting grafted but bare-root plants, grafted but potted and rootstocks that need grafting. Either way, it is ideal to get the trees from a nursery when they are one year old and above for easier management.

Learn about the nutrition needed by the plant. Young trees require food and water. One should focus on food and water after planting this type of tree. The essential nutrient necessary for root growth is phosphate. It helps the young plant to develop root hairs which become feeder roots eventually. You need an in-depth analysis of the soil to determine the best nutrients that suit them.

Acquaint with the pest and diseases control method. Codding moths, coconut bug and the stinkbugs are the most common pests in these sorts of trees. You need to look for reliable pest control sprays that can eliminate this kind of pests. Other control measures include spraying the scabs during the humid period and pruning the trees to make spraying more manageable.
