Twin Screw Pumps In Multiphase Pumping Technologies

By Laura Smith

Pumps are used for moving fluids, such as liquids, slurries, or gases. Three major groups of this are the displacement, direct lift, and gravity pumps. Positive displacement transfers fluid by trapping a fixed amount of it then displacing that amount into the discharge pipe.

Gravity pump is usually referred as a hydraulic ram. This is used by raising the water from the underground to a higher location in lower elevations. Multiphase pumping technologies types and features include buffer tanks, twin screw pumps, helicoaxial, progressive cavity, and electric submersibles. Multiphase production advantages include lesser cost of the equipment, increase in the rate of production, and simpler installation.

Centrifugal is another term for helicoaxial. This works by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to hydrodynamic energy to transport fluids. Rotational energy is coming from the electric motor. The fluid enters the impeller near its rotating axis, and impeller will be accelerating it towards the exit.

A twin screw is made up of two screws that pushes the fluid movement which is being pumped. Pumping conditions like having a high volume of gas or fluctuated inlet conditions are commonly used. Four mechanical seals are needed to seal these two shafts.

A progressive cavity is one kind of positive displacement. The progress of small, discrete cavity, and fixed shape sequence is being used while turning the rotor. This can act also as motor or mud motor if the fluid is pumped in the interior. An application to this is doing a well drilling.

An electric submersible contains a hermetically sealed motor which is close coupled to the pump. The construction is submerged to the solution that is being pushed. One main advantage of using this is it prevents cavitation, which is a problem about the difference of pump and fluid surface. Submersibles are more efficient than jets, since it pushes liquids to the surface, while jets pulls liquids.

Buffer tanks Cobourg ON usually are placed upstream in the suction nozzle of pump in case slug flows will happen. This will help break the liquid slug energy, smoothen fluctuations of flows coming, and acts as a sand trap. Usually, pumps are rated by flow rate, horsepower, inlet pressure in the head, and outlet suction in the head. The head is being simplified as the amount of feet and meters that the pump will raise and lower the column of the water within atmospheric pressure.

Materials that can be used in a pump includes stainless steel, cast iron, and some more. The material will depend on the application of the pump. For pharma application in water industries, stainless steel is commonly used because high temperature of stainless steel can give better result.

Because of the name, multiphase, it involves many variations of its conditions and services which includes changing processes of liquid composition, operation of high and low pressures, temperature variations, and abrasive or erosive media exposure. And the challenge now is selecting the suitable arrangement of support system and mechanical seals in order to know its effectiveness.
