The Equipment Used In The Process Of Injection Molding

By John Roberts

This is a process of manufacturing where in some parts or materials are being injected into a mold. This process is performed with the use of materials such as metals, elastomers, glasses, confections, and two most common which are the thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers. The material which is to be injected is being heated inside a barrel, it is mixed and then it is enforced into mold cavity where it will be hardened and cooled. The designing of products is made by an industrial engineer or designer and molds are manufactured by a mold maker or toolmaker.

Most often, these are made of metal, either steel or aluminum and the makers will use a precision machine for the formation of features of desired part. Injection molding is being used widely now for manufacturing varieties of components, ranging from the smallest parts to the biggest components like body panels of cars. In simple injection, makers often used advanced technologies of a 3D printing or photo polymers.

Those parts which are injected should be designed carefully so that it will facilitate the molding process properly. The parts would include the shapes, features, and materials of parts, and as well as the machine properties and materials of molds. Other uses of these process types include creating bottle caps, wire spools, and automotive parts and components. This type of method is the most popular method in plastic component production.

Some other material which are also utilized are polymers or usually called as the resins. Some elastomers, some thermo sets, and all thermoplastics are also utilized. Epoxy and phenolic are two most common examples for thermosetting plastics. While nylon, polystyrene, and polyethylene are three most common examples for thermoplastics.

Blends of previous materials already used and alloys as well are also used. And by this, it is important for designers to select materials with the best property. In selecting a material, two factors that are needed to be observed are the strength and the function that are important for production and for cost. Parameters of material is important as well.

The machines used in molding are consist of hoppers, screw or ram type plungers, and heating units. These machines are also referred to as presses. These hold the mold from which the components are being shaped. The presses are being rated by a tonnage, the amount of the clamping force exerted by the machine. This force helps in keeping the mold closed when the process is performed.

Molds in Cobourg, ON are built in either the standard machining and the electrical discharge machining. The standard machining is most typically used for building an injection mold. This became the primary means in building complex molds which have more accurate details compared to the traditional method.

An EDM or spark erosion is a process that will allow the formation of shapes that is one difficult job for a machine. It will also allow shaping the pre handed mold which will require no heat treatment. This is a process also that a shaped electrode will be slowly lowered to the molds surface.

Costs will depend upon the cavities being incorporated to the mold. This means that lower manufacturing costs will happen only if there are few cavities, in which will only require less tooling work. Another factor that affects the cost is the complexity of design.
