How To Harvest During The Pecan Season Georgia

By Anthony Burns

Nuts take almost a whole year to become ripe, and their collection takes place from the beginning of October up to December. Fall is symbolized by the ripening of this crop meaning that harvesting mostly happens during the fall. Pecan season Georgia is a time that is marveled since they have a lot of benefits especially in landscaping and gardening as well as cooking.

The farmers are usually aware of the weather is ill and they can tell whether the crop will be good or bad every year. There are so many factors that can affect their growth and harvest, for instance, heat and water. Harvesting the crop is a very detailed process with many stages that have to be followed to the latter. If the weather is ideal and the nut trees grow well, the nut usually have a very high quality taste.

Whether that is extremely cold makes the nut to become the dump, and they might decay leading to significant losses. This makes their taste to be ruined too thus should be taken during harvesting. There are various types of nuts that can withstand the harsh weather conditions, but some other varieties get ruined by the slightest change in the weather. Thus, the farmer should select the variety that is more resistant to the weather.

If you want your nuts to have the quality and ideal taste, it is important to nurture the trees from the beginning. Ensure that you have sprayed them with pesticides or fungicides to prevent infestation of the tree. More so, you should make sure that you have used the right amount of fertilizer so that the tree can have the right nutrients for growth.

The tricky part comes when it is time for harvesting. This is the trickiest part because if you mess at one stage, you are likely to affect the final taste of crop. Therefore, ensure that you follow the procedure for harvesting from start to finish. The first thing to do is to remove the outer most shells from the nuts when the tree is fully grown and mature.

When the pecans are fully ripe, you will notice that their outer coat start breaking by itself. This is a perfect way of checking whether the nuts are ripe or not. Shake the tree vigorously so that the ripe nuts will fall. The unripe nuts will be left on the tree to ripen thus you will not waste them. You will then be required the crops and prepare them for drying.

It is necessary to inspect the nut so that you can remove the bad ones. Drying is then done so that the nut turn to a golden brown color. When harvesting the nuts, drying should be done as soon as possible because wet nuts tend to start rotting thus their appearance as well as quality may be interfered with.

You must store the crop in a cool dry and air tight place during drying. The process takes 2-3 weeks and you have to turn them so that the underneath ones can also dry. Once they are dry, you will find that the shells crack or break neatly. You can then remove the shells and leave the nut fro 2-3 days before processing them.
