Looking For A Replacement Turntable Stylus

By Rebecca Bell

A lot of music lovers will own music on vinyl discs and will use a record deck to play them on. Modern music that is released is now usually sold in a digital format and on CD and sometimes needles for a record player can be difficult to locate. If you need to find a replacement turntable stylus you will have to find a reputable supplier that can sell you a compatible one.

The needle is an essential part of your record player as it is the physical connection between the vinyl and equipment. When your stylus is worn or damaged it will need to be changed to produce a good sound and to protect the surface of your records. There are various types of needle and it is important to find and purchase a compatible one.

A great place to start your search is a professional audio dealer that can be found on many high streets. These stores will have very knowledgeable staff that can assist you in locating a stylus for your turntable. If they do not have your particular needle in stock they will usually be able to order for one from the manufacturer.

The internet is a useful place to purchase new styluses and there are many reliable online suppliers. You will have to spend some time browsing pages of stock and it is a good idea to have the serial number or manufacturer of your existing needle. You will usually pay less when buying online as a web based retailer will have much lower overheads than other retailers and they can sell for lower prices.

If an audio dealer or internet retailer cannot help you can try an established internet auction site. Many of the web based auctions will have styluses listed with a color picture and description which are waiting for the best offer or highest bid. If you are not sure about an item you can always contact the seller and ask for more information before bidding.

If you have older audio equipment you may have difficulty in finding a replacement needle but there are a few options available to you. Searching your local junk stores or charity stores can often produce results as they will often sell old turntables. Contacting an electrical engineer may also be helpful and they may be able to adapt your deck so that a newer stylus can be fitted.

If you know the maker of your stylus it may be worth calling them as many will sell you a replacement. The manufacturers may stock needles that they have produced and will sell them direct to the general public. If they do not have one that is compatible they may recommend a dealer where you will find your stylus.

A stylus is a fragile item and it is important to protect it properly. When you buy a needle it should be kept in its original box until you plan to fit it. Always hang on to your purchase receipt which will enable you to return or exchange a needle when necessary.
