Facts About Golf Course Construction

By Jason Ward

The construction of a golf course is a crucial project that has many complexities. Golf course construction should be done with many thing in mind. You will first need to conduct feasibility studies before the actual work begins. When it comes to technical suitability, the site in question should be very suitable for the project. Such physical elements like land area, topography, vegetation, drainage and water availability will have to be considered.

There also needs to be examination of restraints like legal and environmental bottlenecks that surround use of the land, local infrastructures and location of the services. You will also need to identify any potential conflicts and safety issues. As part of feasibility studies, the market for the project should be considered. You will need to consider if the course will fulfill requirements of the market. This will involve some level of research.

The design concept is very important. The architect assesses the available design opportunities plus restraints and do a review and site surveys. They will then combine all these with the design objectives and vision of the client. The architect will come up with a design concept that indicates potential location of all essential aspects of the project.

There are various limitations that are expected in the course of construction. Steep slopes for instance can lead to extensive earthwork for them to be sustainable. On the other hand, a flat site will need considerable excavation so that drainage is facilitated, specifically surface drainage. The considerable earth movement also creates fill material that will be used to build various features. Other limitations include poor soil conditions, lack of suitable water and the need for conservation of useful natural habitats.

When feasibility studies have been completed, what follows is an investigation of how the concept of design will be converted into the actual golf course. It is during this time that layout of the project that includes various facilities will be prepared. The project budget and programmes are also prepared. There is then development of a master-plan by the project team. The project team is headed by the architect. Other team members include the ecologist, civil engineer, landscaper and consultant for planning.

There are different planning requirements depending on where the project will be. The process of obtaining permission for the planning could be lengthy and cumbersome. The architect provides a package that is detailed and reflects local needs of the planning submission. This will make the entire planning easier. In case an EIA report is needed, the architect will help in developing one.

It is architects who understand all elements of projects. It is for this reason that they are the project leaders. In addition, they help with developing accurate programmes for construction. They also conduct regular visits to sites in the course of construction. This goes a long way in ensuring the project is constructed according to design.

There are many factors that influence the cost of designing a golf course. Some of the factors include the type and scale of project, the technical complexity and the planning approval process. The fees can be a fixed rate, time rate or as a percentage of construction costs.
