Useful Information Regarding Screw Conveyors

By Diane Perry

Conveyor systems refer to mechanical devices that are used to transport materials from one point to another. They are heavily used in production plants and other settings where materials are handled in bulk. These systems are used a lot because they require minimal effort to move materials. This helps to save time and effort that would be involved in the process of moving materials around. Here are facts regarding Screw Conveyors.

For many years, there are numerous types of conveying systems which have been made and are being used. The various types of conveying systems in existence have different modes of operation. This implies that a conveyor will be deemed suitable for a particular application depending on the kind of work to be done. Also, the working mechanism of the system will determine how it is applied.

Even though the various types of conveying systems are designed differently, some of the basic components tend to remain the same. For instance, the various kinds of systems have a frame that provides support to the belt, wheels, or rollers upon which materials are moved. Also, these systems are usually powered through various means. Some common mechanisms of powering them include use of a motor, gravity, or through manual means.

The kind of material that is being transported and the work environment may also determine the kind of conveyor system is used. When one is trying to buy a system, there are several factors that they need to consider. The specifications of the system are some of the most important factors that one should give attention to.

The amount of materials to be moved using the system should be the first factor to be considered. The amount of material to be transported per unit length is usually part of the system specifications. The system can be damaged if the specified capacity is exceeded. One can find this information in the user manual that comes with the machine or at times it is indicated on the machine itself. Another factor is the maximum load capacity which is almost similar to the maximum load per unit length.

The rated speed also known as the belt speed, is another important specification that one should learn about. The system being discussed will determine the units that will be used to describe the rated speed. The speed is normally calculated in feet per minute when dealing with screw or belt conveyors. This speed normally specifies the material that can be moved over a certain duration of time

Since screw conveying systems handle powdered materials and other bulk materials, it usually has a specified throughput. The throughput is usually calculated in volume per unit time. For instance, the throughput can be specified in form of cubic feet per minute. Besides screw conveying systems, there are also other types of conveying systems that have the throughput value specified. These include walking beam, vibrating, vacuum, and bucket conveying systems.

Also, when purchasing a conveyor one should be keen about the frame configuration. Frames may be designed like letter Z, straight, or curved. The location of the drive mechanism is another important factor to consider. The drive mechanism is at times located at the center, or it can alternatively be placed at the discharge end. However, there are rare instances where the propulsion mechanism can be placed at end where materials are fed into the system.
