Basically, SPIs are high performance building materials that are commonly used for flooring, walls, and the roofs of residential and light commercial structures. The materials are manufactured through sandwiching rigid foam insulation plastic between structural facings such as oriented strand board. Different skin materials, however, can be used although for specific reasons. SIPs panels manufactures, however, have controlled conditions in their factory under which these panels are usually made and can also be customized for a home.

Compared to the traditional wood framed structures, buildings made of the structural insulated panels are built much faster. With a properly trained crew, the building time is cut down by more than 50% when compared to building using the conventional stick framing. These material can be manufactured such that a panel is about 8 by 24 ft. This means the roof or the wall is put up faster, hence reducing construction time.

On the other hand, upon delivery to the construction sites, these SIPs are usually set for installation. Consequently, the duration needed in undertaking different jobsite tasks on wood framing for instance sheathing or insulating is eliminated. On the contrary, there lies no reason to drill through studs in order to carry out wiring as the fittings for electric chases are provided inside the panels.

These building materials offer efficiency in costs. This is since builders can save the costs on construction as well as labor. They permit the reduction of HVAC equipment together with ductworks. In addition, wastes for disposal at a jobsite together with temporary heat become minimal as the process of construction proceeds. Again, SIP homes possess energy-efficient features and will enhance the savings on utility.

Generally, the SIPs are among the green building systems that are available today. This is because their building envelope offers a continuous insulation that is highly airtight, reduces construction wastage, helps in saving natural resources and allows better control of indoor air quality. Also, there is tremendous positive impact on the environments since emission of greenhouse gas and energy use are reduced in the entire lifecycle of a home.

The SPI structures are also airtight requiring mechanical ventilation. These ventilation systems provides fresh air to the building in controlled amount, while the stale and the moisture laden air are expelled outside. Due to the limited air exchange in the controlled ventilation, incoming air is often filtered of allergens and dehumidified. This result in quality indoor air.

SIPs are usually compatible to various building systems. It is possible to place wall panels on a number of foundation materials like blocks, insulated concrete foams and even poured concrete. Again, their sizes remain compatible to wooden frames and fits the dimensional lumber. They are usually known to offer proper insulations to enclosures of wood-framed buildings.

Following any damage to SPIs, the damage need to be assessed to know whether the damage is either cosmetic or a structural damage. If the damage is cosmetic, the moisture source is determined and fixed. But is the problem is structural the cause is identified and a solution offered like panel modification or replacement.
