Educating Communities On Addiction And Some Basic Tips

By Brenda Brown

There are many forms of addiction but the most common of these are illegal drugs. Continued use of these addicting substances may result in interfering with your responsibilities like work, relationship and health. Addicted people might not notice that their changed behavior is causing problems for other people around and himself as well.

The number of addicted persons are increasing greatly and something needs to be done to stop this. Prevention and intervention should be done like educating communities on addiction in order to make them understand the negative effects that could happen because of it. Orange County, California have programs that could help the community in tackling these problems.

Most of the victims of drug abuse are children who are lured into using one by their friends because of peer pressure. Parents should help in educating their children about the side effects of these activities to their body and mind. Here are some things that parents can teach to their children.

Learn to not be afraid in saying no to your friends. Kids do not want to receive negative reactions from their friends so that is why they are afraid in saying no. They are told a lie that every one is doing it. Learn to make decisions on your own and do not allow anyone to pressure you to do something that is not right.

Be careful of the friends you choose and avoid those who are drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs. You need not do what they are doing to get along with them. Negative peer pressure should be avoided and get active with school and community activities instead. Do what you love doing like sports, music or arts.

Have connections with your parents and other adults to be able to talk with them regarding your life and also rely on them. Talk about anything to them which includes your decisions regarding the use of alcohol and drugs. They could give you advice based on experiences they have had on these issues. Gaining their trust is important so you would be given their confidence in making your own decisions.

Be informed on the negative effects of alcohol and drug abuse may bring to your body and the relationship you have with the people around you. There are some misconceptions about them being shared around so learn which one is true or not. Share these information you found and be a positive role model for your friends.

Be prepared and plan ahead when you go out with your friends to a party or anywhere else. Make sure to have someone that you can call anytime you need help. By doing this, you will have someone to help you out if there is anyone pressuring you in doing things you do not like to do or prevent you from becoming a victim by a person under the influence.

If you are already in trouble with substance abuse, get help immediately. There are many institutions that can help you getting rid of your addiction and there is no need to do it alone. If you have friends who are in trouble too, let them get help as well immediately.
