They are multi skilled professionals that know how to plan and manage an event that needs the smooth coordination of the efforts of numerous other professionals such as caterers, cleaners, serving staff and entertainers. They need to be exceptionally good at planning and they need to be able to communicate effectively. On top of this, they need a large database of contacts within the industry.

Function organizers can only satisfy the needs of their clients if they are fully briefed on those needs. They need to know what the budget is.
