Finding Replacement Record Player Needles

By Carol Williams

A lot of people will own a large music collection on vinyl so they will need a deck to play them on. Modern music releases are now sold on digital mp3 or compact disc and styluses for a turntables are often difficult to find. When you need to find replacement record player needles, you will have to find a supplier that can sell you a compatible one.

The stylus is a vital part of a record deck as it is the only physical connection between disc and equipment. When a needle is worn out or badly damaged it will have to be changed to produce quality sound and to protect the record surface. There are many needles that are available and it is important to use a good supplier to sell you a compatible one.

The first place to look for your replacement styluses is an audio store in your area. Many specialist stores are available with experienced staff that will advise you and they will usually stock needles to fit to your record player. If they do not have a stylus that is suitable, they can order one from a supplier for you, in most cases.

The net is also useful place to buy your new turntable needles and there are many reputable online suppliers available. You will need to browse their pages of stock and it is helpful to have the serial number or maker of your existing stylus. You may also pay less when buying online as the retailers who trade on the web will have lower overheads than a high street retailer.

If a high street dealer or web based retailer cannot help, it is useful to have a look at an internet auction site. Many of these auctions will have needles listed with a picture and description and you can bid on an item or make an offer. If you are not certain about an item, you can contact the seller directly and ask for more details, before you bid.

In some cases, with older audio equipment, finding replacement parts is almost impossible but there are still a few options available. Searching local junk stores can sometimes produce results as they often sell old turntables. Contacting a qualified electrical engineer may also help as they may be able to make some changes to your deck so that it can be fitted with a different stylus.

If you own a really old record player, you may not be able to find a suitable stylus, and there are a couple of things that you can do. Visiting second hand shops can sometimes be useful as many of them will sell old audio equipment. Another option is to contact an electrical engineer and get them to adapt your turntable to take a more modern stylus.

A needle is a delicate item and it needs to be well protected to keep it in good condition. If you do not fit a stylus when you buy one, keep it boxed until you intend to fit it. When you buy replacements, it is advisable to keep the receipt for when you need to return or exchange the item.
